Alabama political analyst, historian Bill Stewart dies after illness

In Alabama politics, there are players and there are observers.

And then, every now and then, someone comes along to help make sense of it all.

Was William H. “Bill” Stewart Jr. is among the best of these, having spent most of the past five decades educating students, reporters, and the public alike about the intricacies that have affected state and local policy.

But Alabama lost that voice on Sunday when Stewart, suffering from illness, died at the age of 81.

A native of Hartselle, he taught political science as a professor at the University of Alabama for more than 40 years, Stewart continued to teach after his retirement, serving as Professor Emeritus in the Political Science Department of the UA College of Arts and Sciences, where he was recognized as an expert on Alabama state politics.
