Aston Villa update emerges concerning Cameron Archer’s future amid PNE loan return hopes

Preston North End are seeking to bring Cameron Archer back to the club from Aston Villa for the upcoming season.

Archer scored seven goals in 20 Championship outings in the second half of the previous campaign for North End. The starlet bagged a further four goals for England Under-21s over the international break.

He has been linked with Rangers, Watford, West Brom and Queens Park Rangers in the last week. North End have vowed to match any other loan offer made by a fellow Championship club, and manager Ryan Lowe revealed after the final day of the 2021/22 season that Archer had expressed his desire to come back to Deepdale – if made available for a loan again.

Speaking after the last game of last season, Lowe said: “If he becomes available, he’s basically told me there’s only one place he’d like to go and that’s back here – so that is a big plus for us.

“I told him there is going to be loads spoken about him, loads of people throwing loads of money at Aston Villa to try and buy him. I don’t think it is the right thing to do, for Aston Villa to sell him, I’ve already mentioned that to Stevie (Gerrard).

“He needs to stay around. I think he is a Premier League player because he’s a goal scorer – a Jermain Defoe type.

“But I think if he goes out on loan to us again next season, he will find his feet, find his level and kick on the following year – just like Sepp van den Berg and Daniel Iversen have done. If you want to mirror anything, look what those two have done; they will go on to bigger and better probably and I’m sure Cam can do the same.”

It remains to be seen where Archer will be playing his football next season, whether that be at Villa or elsewhere out on loan again. But an update has emerged which concerns the West Midlands club.

According to journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon page, Villa boss Steven Gerrard wants to sign another striker before he lets Archer head out on loan again. North End are among several Championship clubs which want to have the youngster for the upcoming campaign.
