Barcelona loan striker set for Mexico move, negotiations ongoing

Luuk de Jong’s time at Barcelona is drawing to a close, with the striker set to return to his parent club Sevilla imminently. However, he is unlikely to remain at the La Liga outfit for much longer either, with a transfer to Mexican club Toluca on the horizon, report Jose Manuel Garcia and Fabrizio Romano.

Barcelona signed the towering striker on the transfer deadline day of the summer window last year as a replacement for Antoine Griezmann, who left for Atletico Madrid.

Luuk de Jong arrived on a season-long loan deal with the option of making the transfer permanent. Upon arrival, the transfer was criticised and ridiculed by a large section of the supporters, with the Netherlands ace failing to make any sort of impact.

He was even overlooked by Xavi after the 42-year-old took over the reins of the club from Ronald Koeman. But a spate of injuries and fitness problems forced the manager to count on de Jong at the start of the second half of the season, and the striker made the most of it.

Indeed, the Dutchman scored some vital goals for Barça and continued to play a vital role as a squad player even after the arrival of the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran Torres.

So much so that, there had been some talks about the club even considering signing him permanently. However, that idea has been done away with, with the 31-year-old now in line to return to Sevilla.

But, he is unlikely to remain for long at the Andalusian club as a move to Mexico is on the cards. Indeed, as per the update, negotiations are already underway between Toluca and Sevilla over a transfer, with the striker giving his consent to the transfer.

De Jong ended the 2021/22 campaign with seven goals and an assist from 29 games for Barcelona. And if things go to plan, he will be plying his trade in Mexico next season.
