WHBQ-TV, citing anonymous law enforcement sources, reported that a shooting incident in Memphis claimed the life of rapper Young Dolph on Wednesday.

The shooting took place around 1 p.m. at Makeda’s Butter Cookies bakery in south Memphis, according to WHBQ. Shop owner, Maurice Hill, told the news station that Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., had gone to the store to buy biscuits when someone drove by and shot and killed him.
Update 5:37PM EST Nov 17th: Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland has called for calm in the wake of the murder of rapper Young Dolph on Wednesday.
“To honor all victims of violent crime, I am asking for calm in our city to allow the Memphis Police Department to do their part to apprehend those responsible, Strickland chirp.
Stickland also added that the rapper’s death “serves as another reminder of the pain that violent crime brings”.
Update 4:44PM EST Nov 17th: The performing arts agency, the talent agency that represented Young Dolph, said in a statement that it was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the rapper’s death.
“All of us at APA are shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of our dear friend and client, Young Dolph,” an APA representative said in a statement to Variety. “The world has lost an icon, a great man and a beloved artist captured so early on. His dedication, drive, hard work and loyalty to all around him have always come first and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers for his family at this most difficult time.”
Young Dolph, 36, released his debut album “King of Memphis” in 2016. His second album, “Rich Slave” was released in 2020 and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. He was well known throughout the Memphis area, where he distributed roosters at number four on the Billboard 200. Rumi is on Thanksgiving through the Memphis Ministries Sports Charitable Foundation, spoke to schoolchildren and donated money to his former high school, WHBQ reports.

Crowds gathered at the shooting scene Wednesday afternoon, and tears sank to the ground, according to the news station. Authorities told WHBQ that another person was with Young Dolph at the time of the shooting.
Authorities did not immediately release information about the shooter, WHBQ reported.
