Spanish outlet slams Man Utd forward for failed loan spell

Anthony Martial’s future at Manchester United is up in the air, with the Frenchman’s dramatic drop in form leaving him on the periphery at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old was let go by Ralf Rangnick in the January transfer window but his six-month loan at Sevilla has done him no good.

Martial failed to find the net in any of his nine appearances in La Liga and sustained two-month-long injuries, which seriously hampered his bid to resurrect his career.

The France international’s barren run in front of goal now stands at four months, having last scored in Sevilla’s Copa del Rey win over Elche in February. Prior to that, Martial had only managed five goals in 2021.

The Spanish press are known for their strong critique and no punches were held when it was time to assess Martial’s six months in Andalusia.

“Martial’s stint as a Sevilla player can only be described as a fiasco,” publication AS wrote, via The Peoples Person. “For the investment made, for the expectations created and for the worse than poor performance offered.

“And the fact is that he scored the same two goals and gave an assist [when he was 18], but he did so playing 15 games in a team [Monaco] in which he had to compete for the position with players of the stature of Falcao and Berbatov.”

Martial is expected to be named in Erik ten Hag’s pre-season squad on June 27, with the Dutchman set to assess his squad for the first time since being unveiled as the club’s new manager last month.

But there is little hope for Martial, who is not expected to be part of the Dutchman’s plans. As of this summer, Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga are all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Martial has two years remaining on his contract at United and the upcoming transfer window would be the perfect time to cash in on him. His high wages could, however, prove to be a stumbling block as he would most likely need to accept a pay cut.
