[VIDEO] New Edition & NKOTB AMAs — Watch American Music Awards 2021

What’s old suddenly became new again during Sunday’s American Music Awards, which greeted an iconic pair of ’80s music groups on stage for decades of performance.

In fact, it was more of a standoff than a traditional performance. New Release (Ricky Bell, Michael Bivens, Bobby Brown, Ronnie Defoe, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant) and New Kids on the Block (Jonathan Knight, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood) come together for something described as “The Battle of Boston” .

The musical brawl featured parts of the two groups’ biggest hits, including “You Got It (The Right Stuff)”, “Candy Girl”, “Step by Step”, “Mr. Phone Man,” “Can You Stand the Rain” and “Hangin’ ‘Tough.’

Watch footage from the battle, which we’ll replace with a full video if/when it becomes available, below:

Although neither group is ready for an AMA this year, both have had success in the past. The new release won Favorite Soul/R&B Band/Duo/Group in 1987 and 1997, while New Kids won Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album (Hangin’ tough) in 1990.

New Kids last performed at the American Music Awards in 2010, while it’s been much longer (1997!) since the AMAs last performed for the new version.

Other notable artists at this year’s AMAs include Bad Bunny, BTS, Carrie Underwood, Chlöe, Coldplay, Diplo, Jason Aldean, Jennifer Lopez, Julieta Venegas, Kane Brown, Måneskin, Mickey Guyton, Olivia Rodrigo, Silk Sonic, Tainy and Tyler Creator Walker Hayes and Zoe Weiss. Megan Thee Stallion was originally scheduled to perform Butter with BTS, but had to back out at the last minute for personal reasons.
